4TH GRADE BAND STUDENTS (2011-2012 School Year)
PLEASE TALK TO YOUR HOMEROOM TEACHERS ABOUT WHERE TO STORE YOUR INSTRUMENTS ON THE DAYS THAT YOU BRING YOUR INSTRUMENT TO SCHOOL. THE PROCESS MAY BE DIFFERENT FOR EACH TEACHER.
GROUP LESSONS
For the 2011-2012 school year, most 4th grade band students will be receiving GROUP LESSONS of like instruments. For instance, if your student chooses to play the saxophone, he/she will be assigned to a lesson with other saxophones. Saxophones and trumpets will not be assigned to the same lesson time.
EACH STUDENT NEEDS THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS:
1. Colored pencil/pen (at least 2 different colors to mark music)
2. Ed Sueta Book 1 (with students name on the outside cover) - During each lesson, the students will play exercises from the method book. I will check off each lessons they are completed.
3. 1/2 inch 3-ring binder with several pages of loose-leaf paper and 2 pockets. I will be documenting your students progress in this binder. This is also another form of communication between Mrs. Tessereau and parents. The binder can be any color or design. I will also be placing practice charts in each binder that will need to be signed weekly by the parents.
4. I will also be giving the students a practice chart that will be kept inside each binder. The STUDENTS will need to document their practice time and WHAT they practiced. Parents will need to initail the students documentation each week. There is no penalty for not having this signed, however, the students will not receive additional rewards if it is not signed.
PRIVATE LESSONS
In addition to having group lessons at school, many students choose to take private lessons (see link above). Private teachers offer individualized instruction that will help each student progress at a faster rate than the students that do not study privately. Private teachers are also able to pass a student on their exercises in the Ed Sueta book. It is very important that you discuss your intent of private lessons with the private teacher that you have chosen. When your student enters private lessons, you should set goals from the very first lesson. If you do not inform your private teacher of specific goals, most will immediately jump into intense technique. These goals WILL change throughout your enrollment in private lessons (sometimes weekly).
Regardless of whether students study privately with someone, the amount of time spent practicing is going to be the single most important factor in learning an instrument.
SCHEDULING
Each student will be given a schedule by the second full week of school (hopefully). Students will be assigned lessons during the school day and pulled from academic classes. Once your student is enrolled in lessons, they will be expected to attend their assigned lesson time each week. Students will not be taken out of reading classes.
The schedule may change at anytime throughout the school year. Reasons for schedule changes vary. A student may be progressing very quickly/slowly or a student may be struggling in the academic class that the are being pulled out of for lessons. These are the most common reasons for schedule changes for your band student but they are not limited to these situations. Changing one persons schedule can casue several students to have a schedule change.
Once a student receives their schedule, they are responsible for attending their lesson time regularly. The teachers do try to help the students at the beginning of the school year, however, band students are leaving the classroom every 15 minutes and this can cause a major disruption to the entire classroom and teaching flow. Many students in the past have found it helpful to have a watch with an alarm clock that is set for 5 minutes prior to their scheduled lesson time.
WHEN DOES THE STUDENT ENTER 5TH GRADE BAND?
Several students will complete Book 1 during the school year. Once your 4th grader has completed book one, they may enter 5th grade band. If the students are in 5th grade band, they will need to bring their instruments every Monday and Wednesday (full band) and a new lesson time may be assigned.
Students that are moved into the 5th Grade Band during the school year are expected to participate in concerts and contests that are remaining throughout the school year.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO CONTACT MRS. TESSEREAU?
The best way to contact Mrs. Tessereau is through email. Please do not leave a message on the school voicemail as I do not check that regularly. ltessereau@stclair.k12.il.us
